Subtext: Contemporary Art Inspired by Jane Austen’s House

Subtext was a contemporary art show by MA Fine Art artists bringing together new artworks in response to Jane Austen’s writings, her life, and the socio-political histories. The work was displayed throughout ten rooms and spaces of the house.
For the Courtyard Gallery, I created three handmade artist books. From painterly textures to flat surfaces, these book forms contain a collection of collages and images in response to selected Jane Austen quotes. Drawing from both her books and letters, the viewer is invited to handle the books and experience Austen’s words reimagined by the artist.
